OBIT: Charles ‘Chuck’ F. Wagner

LORAIN — Charles “Chuck” F. Wagner, 80 years of age, and a resident of Lorain, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on July 2, 2010 at Oak Hills Nursing Home in Lorain, Ohio following a brief illness.

He was born March 20, 1930 in Lorain, Ohio.  He was raised in Lorain and graduated from Clearview High School in 1948. In 1968 he moved to Vermilion, Ohio where he resided until 1996 when he moved to Colorado. He returned to Ohio in Sept. 2009.

Charles was employed as an assembler at the Ford Motor Company in Lorain and Avon Lake for thirty years before retiring in 1992.  After his retirement, he and his wife spent many happy years traveling in their RV, fishing and hunting. He was a former member of Fellowship Baptist Church (the former Penfield Junction Baptist) in Lorain where he was a founding member and former deacon. He also had been a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Sandusky for several years.

Charles is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Marilyn May Wagner (nee: Alger); his daughters and their husbands Susan M. and  Gene Balicki of Hartsel, Colorado; Barbara J. and Keith Stigers of Cedarville, Ohio; his son and his wife James and Debbie Carroll of Aurora, Ohio; his grandchildren Jonathan (Billi) Keener, Jennifer (DeWitt) Gober, Drew, Nikki, Eric, and Amy Carroll, and Jeromy Balicki;  his sister Mary Lou Wagner of Elyria; as well as several great grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Samuel, Harry Jr., George, Edward and Wilbur Wagner; his sisters Grace Fitzgerald, Dorothy Trifiletti, Wilma Strehle, Catherine VanNiel and Francis Wagner; and by his parents Harry F. and Elizabeth Wagner (nee: Miller).

He had spent his last months under the faithful care of his granddaughter, Jennifer Gober and Oak Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation staff and Crossroads Hospice. Thanks and appreciation goes to each one who gently took care of him.

Friends may call Tuesday, July 6, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Hixon, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Sandusky, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.

OBIT: Richard Toth

ELYRIA — Richard A. Toth Sr., 67, of Elyria, died Friday, July 2, 2010 in the emergency room at EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria after a long illness.

He was born July 22, 1942 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Elyria area resident. Richard graduated from Elyria Catholic High School and then served with the U.S. Navy. He was the owner/operator of Toth Drywall for over 30 years retiring in 2006. He enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his sons Richard A. Toth, Jr and John W. Toth (Julie), both of Elyria, father John A. Toth of Elyria and brother Raymond Toth of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his mother Helen L. Toth (nee Polesko) in 1992.

The family will receive friends Monday 7-9 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 9:30 am in the funeral chapel followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 41295 N. Ridge Rd., Elyria Twp. The Rev. James Ols, pastor, will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by Louis Paul Proy Chapter 20 of the Disabled American Veterans. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.

OBIT: Charles Minnich

Charles (Chas) Minnich died on Friday, July 2nd, at the age of 71 after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born on June 25, 1939, to Charles and Helen Minnich.  Chas graduated high school in 1957 from Lorain St. Mary’s Academy, and graduated from Baldwin-Wallace College in 1964. Chas was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He enjoyed long-distance running, and in 1979 competed in the Boston Marathon. Chas retired from Ford Motor Company in 1997 after a career of over thirty years that spanned both the Lorain and Avon Lake facilities.

Chas was a long-time parishioner of St. Joseph Parish in Avon Lake.  His many interests included woodworking, gardening, travel, golf, reading, and getting into various kinds of mischief. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Helen (nee Hildebrandt), and a brother, David.

Chas is survived by his wife Doris (nee Stinson) and four children; Colleen Kane (Kevin), Susan Peplin (Scott), Charles Minnich (Colleen), and Christine Kinsman (Drew). He leaves nine grandchildren to cherish his memory; Abigail, Caroline, Brenna, Sam, Maxwell, Grace, Olivia, Owen, and Quinn.  He leaves nine siblings; his sisters, Carolyn Breines, Jeanine Shawver, Ruth Zocchi (Dom), Mary Alice Sanchez, and brothers; Bruce (Cheryl), Daniel (Karen), Michael, Mark (Beverly), and Paul.

Calling hours will be held at the Busch Funeral Home, 163 Avon Belden Rd. Avon Lake,  from 2-4 PM, and 6-8 PM, on Tuesday, July 6th; at 8 PM the family will conduct a prayer service and share memories of Chas. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM at St. Joseph Church, 32929 Lake Rd., Avon Lake, Wednesday, July 7th. Fr. Timothy O’Connor and Fr. Thomas Weber will co-celebrate. Burial will be private.

OBIT: Marian Bertha Sklenar

ELYRIA — Marian Bertha Sklenar (nee: Panzel) 82, of Elyria passed away Friday July 2, 2010 at Fairview Hospital following a long illness.

She was born November 20, 1927 in Lorain. Marian was a 1946 Lorain High School graduate, and worked as a bookkeeper for 25 years at the Kasper Foundry in Elyria. She was a member of St. Peter and Paul Lutheran Church in Lorain, the Jolly 60’s, and The Sonrisa Club. Marian enjoyed reading biographies and using the computer.

Survivors include her husband John whom she married 63 years on November 30, 1946, a daughter; Carole McGee (Paul) of Harrisburg, PA, two grandchildren; Ryan and Laura, two brothers; Vincent and Edward Panzel both of Lorain.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Vincent and Bertha (nee: Bodnar) Panzel, three sisters; Julie Teaman, Dorothy Rote, Elaine Kapalin.

OBIT: Carl E. Jones

LORAIN — Carl E. Jones, age 74, a  resident of Lorain, passed away  peacefully on Saturday, July 3, 2010 at Amherst Specialty Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Carl was born on January 31, 1936 to Stockton and Bessie(nee Coleman) Jones in Otway, Ohio. His family came to Lorain in 1943.  He was a graduate of the 1955B class of Lorain High School.
Carl was employed by the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier for 31 years, retiring in 1988.

He was a member of St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish in Lorain and a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Carl enjoyed fishing, gardening, singing, musicals and watching and “coaching” sports in his recliner at home. He was an avid Buckeyes fan.

In 1990, Carl received the gift of a kidney donation for which he was extremely grateful. Helping others and childrens charities were of major importance to him. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was always there for their activities and sporting events.

Carl is survived by his daughters, Lori A. Garcia(Rick), of Lorain and Valerie M. Jones, of Sunbury, Ohio; son, Jeffrey C. Jones, of Amherst; grandchildren, Timothy, of Columbus, Renee, of Columbus and Christopher, of Lorain; special family friends, Jennifer and Cherie; longtime companion, Jean Evechick.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Marie Jones (nee Cicco);brothers, Edwin and Vaughn Jones; sister, Dorothy and parents, Stockton and Bessie Jones.

The Jones Family would like to extend a special thank you to Griswold Special Care, Beth, Lisa and Cheryl for their loving and wonderful care.

OBIT: Robert ‘Twenty’ Hannibal

LORAIN — Robert “Twenty” Hannibal, age 59, of Lorain passed away on June 29, 2010 at New Life Hospice following a lengthy illness.

He was born January 26, 1951 in Aiken, South Carolina, but had been a resident of Lorain for 50 years. He was a 1969 graduate of Admiral King High School.

Robert was the proprietor of Hannibal Plumbing and was a member of the Body of Christ Glorious Church in Lorain.

He was employed by U.S. Steel as a pipe fitter for 30 years, retiring in 1999, and was a member of United Steelworkers of America Local 1104. Throughout his retirement he enjoyed going to the flea market, welding, and being a handy man. He also enjoyed feeding wild animals and especially enjoyed seeing his granddaughters.

Robert will be sadly missed by his devoted wife of 37 years, Tina G. Hannibal (nee Campbell); his daughter, Gegia (Clifton) Kilgore of Lorain; his sons, Rashad (Carla) Hannibal of Covington GA, Murad Hannibal of Lorain and Anwar Hannibal of Greensboro NC; his mother, Rosabelle Hannibal of Lorain; his sisters; Patricia Currie of Columbus OH and Lisa (Gary) Wyatt of Oberlin; his brothers, James “Al” Hannibal of Lorain and Joseph Hannibal of Maryland; 2 grandchildren, Gelea Kilgore of Lorain and Jasmine Clark of Greensboro NC; nieces and nephews; and a host of other relative and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father; Bishop James Edward Hannibal; a brother, Eddie “Shawn” Hannibal; and a sister in infancy.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 7, 2010 from 10 a.m. until timeof service at 12:00 noon at Body of Christ Glorious Church, 2120 W 23rd St. in Lorain, with District Elder Rodney Thomas officiating. Burial will take place in Elmwood Cemetery in Lorain.

VERMILION — Mary Rose Call-Cawley (nee LaMarca) 85, of Vermilion, died Thursday, July 1, 2010 at the Inn at Chappel Creek following a lengthy illness.

Born October 21, 1924 in Portage, PA she had been a Parma resident most of her life, moving to Vermilion 8 years ago from Bradenton, FL.

Mary worked as a waitress for several restaurants including Pat Joyce’s, Cleveland.

Survivors include her sons, William (Mary Lou) Call Jr. of Lakewood and James Call of Vermilion; daughter Michelle (Greg) Fiegelist of Vermilion; sisters, Anna (Joe-deceased) Marlette of North Royalton and Genevieve (Tony) Maniaci of Zanesville; brother, Louis (Linda) LaMarca of Akron; sister-in-law, Marci LaMarca of Brunswick; 4 grandchildren: Greg Fiegelist Jr., Melissa Bourisseau, Katie Juray, and Chase Radford; and 5 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her former husband, William Call; parents, Louis and Mary (nee Lentine) LaMarca; grandson, Brian Call; brother, Sam LaMarca; and sister-in-law, Christine LaMarca.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, July 9, 2010 at 2 pm at the Inn at Chappel Creek, 6010 West Lake Road, Vermilion, OH 44089.

OBIT: Kevin Charles Bechtel

BIRMINGHAM — Kevin Charles Bechtel, 48 years of age, and a resident of Birmingham, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo following injuries incurred from a fall on his property.

He was born Sept. 11, 1961 in Oberlin, Ohio. Kevin was raised in Birmingham and graduated from Firelands High School in the class of 1980.  He had lived the majority of his life
in the Birmingham area.

Kevin began his working career at the age of fourteen at NAPA where he held several positions and worked at several locations before becoming the Wholesale Markets Manager for the NAPA Carrollton Distribution Center. Beside his positions with NAPA he also held employment with several other companies most of which revolved around the auto industry. He was a member of Brownhelm Congregational United Church of Christ. He enjoyed NASCAR racing and participated in racing at the Lorain County Speedway.  Kevin’s hobbies included skiing and cooking. All of his past times revolved around his greatest joy which was spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his father Donald C. Bechtel of Birmingham; his twin brother and his wife Kent and Susan Kim-Bechtel of Kirtland, Ohio; his sisters Rev. Jan Bechtel of Defiance, Ohio and Barb Bechtel of Amherst; his niece Sydney Bechtel; his uncles and aunts Raymond and Dorothy Bechtel; Robert and Dorothy (Jessie) Bechtel all of Brownhelm Township; and  his aunt Margaret Petersen of Lorain; He was preceded in death by his mother Jeanette Bechtel (nee: Schubert) on December 15, 2003; and his infant brother Donald C. Bechtel Jr.

Friends may call Monday, July 5, 2010 from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst.
